The weekend of August 3 to 6 marked a major milestone for the Philadelphia PowerPlay, as we participated in our first international tournament. Facing teams from Minnesota, Michigan, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and London (Ontario), the PowerPlay did the Philadelphia area proud. We played 5 games, and though a win was not in the cards, it certainly wasn’t due to lack of skill, effort, or heart. Aside from our very good showing, including two 2-1 losses and a 6-6 tie, the main talk of the tournament was about how much everyone thought of your teammates off the playing surface. Trust me when I say that we were thrilled to know that we represented everyone in the PowerPlay family with such class and dignity.
At the end of the 2012 Powerhockey Cup, the Philadelphia PowerPlay tournament coaching staff of John Shinn, Tony Damico, and Gary Saxton were named Best Coaching Staff. I cannot begin to thank them enough for their tireless commitment to the PowerPlay during both the regular season and tournament play. You are all amazing people and I thank you all for your time and effort.
Our teammates Jake Saxton and Jake Hartline also received individual recognition as Jake Saxton was named Top Forward and Jake Hartline was nominated for Best Defenseman. All of you on the Philadelphia PowerPlay are extremely talented, and both Jakes proved that point very well.
Thank you to the people who made this tournament experience possible, the PowerPlay Advisory Committee. Members to be singled out for their help are Joanne Shipman, who was responsible for team logistics including selecting and booking our wonderful hotel and Richard Weaver for providing guidance and financial support.
Most importantly, I want to thank the families and friends of our players. During both the regular season and tournaments, you are a constant presence. I know that if you are anything like me, the presence of such people are what make being part of a team so special.
